Anyone play Attack Wing?
My sister and her fiance bought me the starter set last Christmas and I finally played it for the first time (against them) last weekend.

First game, three way match:
Me with the Ent-D commanded by Riker
The sister with some Klingon Vor'Cha
The fiance with the Ent-E commanded by Picard

For my first game I did quite well. The E-D handles like a bathtub filled with water, but I managed to manoeuvre so that when the E-E did a fly past and blasted me I dropped a minefield on top of him. He was then left as the only ship in range of the VorCha - and my sister took full advantage (after spending the game until then honorably skulking around under cloak at the opposite side of the map).
The E-E then bravely ran away off the side of the map, leaving the Vor'Cha to chase me around the mine field. Fortunately they didn't predict a turn and ended up in my rear firing arc without me being in theirs - so I blasted them and won :)

Second game was just me with a D'Deridex and the fiance with the Voyager. I think Voyager must have been a favourite of the game maker as it can out turn pretty much anything, is stupidly tough and has good firepower. Plus the crew has some insane skills. I started off with a really bad roll and missed horribly, and from then on I couldn't get it back in my firing arc. I was one move away from pulling a turn to get a head on pass but *boom* game over.

Anyway, I decided if they were going to pull tricks like that I should at least try and even the odds and I've just bought an Enterprise Refit (not the A) which has some nice crew skills and I'm waiting for an Excelsior to turn up in the next few days too...

If there's any interest I'll try to explain a bit more about the game, it's surprisingly in depth but still quite quick to play through. Of course, I've only done small single ship games so far.

So, my Enterprise (original refit) and Excelsior. Both must be reprints as the paint scheme is far better than the review videos I've seen. Excelsior looks to have good firing arcs (a forward 180 plus an aft 90) but the Enterprise turns far better. The crew skills should also help even the odds next time I play, although I ma eyeing up the Valdore and Scimitar as the models look quite good. I'd also like a K'Tinga but the models are apparently a bit hit and miss, and as we don't get many reprints over here those that are about are quite pricey.

This sounds like a fun game. How does cloak work?

I think Voyager must have been a favourite of the game maker as it can out turn pretty much anything, is stupidly tough and has good firepower. Plus the crew has some insane skills.
They're just accurately reproducing the sketchy writing of the show via stats.

Cloak is an interesting mechanic, but I'll need to explain the basic combat mechanics first.
Combat works by rolling offense and defence dice. Each ship has an offense value and a defence value. If you look at the cards above, both the Enterprise and Excelsior have an offense value of 3 (red) and a defence value of 1 (green). So at a basic level if the Enterprise were firing on the Excelsior the Enterprise would roll three attack die and the Excelsior would roll 1 defence die. Now these values are adjustable depending on range and ship upgrades. A game will typically have a point value. You can see from the image that the Enterprise is worth 24 points, so you can load the ship up with a Captain, crew, weapons and tech to make up the allowed point value. Each of these upgrades will have abilities which have uses in game (including but not limited to increasing defence/offense values, e.g. some klingon crew can board enemy ships and kill their crew or sabotage equipment).
Now I know I haven't yet answered the question but I'm getting there...
Cloaking provides two main benefits. Firstly the ship rolls extra defence die (4 I think). Secondly it allows the ship to perform a "sensor echo". Obviously a cloaked ship is still on the board and the players can see it, but "sensor echo" allows the cloaked ship to move sideways simulating location uncertainty. Of course, a cloaked ship has to lower its shields when cloaked, so any damage it takes is on the hull (yellow value) instead of the shields (blue value).
During the attack phase of the turn, a cloaked ship can fire on a target. Because it is firing from cloak it gets some advantage in the attack (I forget what, I only played a cloaked ship once and it was a disaster), however at the end of the turn it loses its cloak and if the player wishes to recloak they have to spend their action the following turn to do so.
Actions are what is shown on the majority of crew/captain/tech cards, and are done after movement but before firing. If a ship cloaks it cant perform another action (unless it has an upgrade which allows multiple actions).

Conceptually its a simple game, however the combinations of upgrades can soon increase the level of complexity.

I think we can guess how well it'll go if your attack from cloak didn't manage to neutralize the target.

For game mechanics the cloak stays up until then end of the turn, but is down the following turn.
Found the rules online if anyone is interested in the mechanics. Unfortunately they are too big to upload so here is the link to where you can find them.

So my birthday present to myself arrived today - the USS Reliant. Other than wanting a collection of TMP era ships there's only one reason for wanting Reliant...
KHAAAAANNN!

The IRW Valdore. This is a gorgeous model, and a bit larger than the rest of my small fleet. However I find the stats a little disappointing. The starter pack D'Deridex actually turns better at slow speed (although the Valdore does have a "come about" (or pivot) which is rare in non-Klingon ships). Also it doesn't come with many crew upgrades. If I were to play the starter D'Deridex and the Valdore together I actually wouldn't have enough crew for both of them.

New toys!!! Found a store online selling them at £6.50 each (instead of £12+) and bought a D7, another D'D, a Mirror Defiant and a TOS Enterprise.
Today the package arrived and...
they sent the TMP Enterprise. So I've dropped them an email asking if I can exchange it for a TOS version as that is definitely what they advertised. I suspect that they didn't know the difference as they aren't actually marketing a TMP Enterprise. So I'm not opening anything until I hear back from them.
The Defiant paint job is surprisingly good (STAW has a really bad reputation for painting models) and the D7 model (a proper D7 not a Wraith cruiser knockoff) is absolutely gorgeous and full of 3D detail. It must actually be a K'Tinga model.
Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to exchange just the Enterprise and then I'll take some pictures.

Update. The owner got in touch with me pretty sharpish and apologised for his staff not knowing the difference between a TOS and a TMP Connie. He's had a check of the stock and found they don't actually have any TOS Connies, and he's also realised that his stock doesn't actually match the website - especially as some of it is newer reprints.
Anyway, among those reprints is an actual Defiant (not a mirror), and as these things are typically going for £50+ on Amazon and Ebay I'm getting two, one for me and one for the future brother-in-law who has apparently been looking for one since forever.
Because of the mixup, and because they don't actually have what I ordered in stock, the owner has offered to let me keep the TMP Enterprise and send me another ship of my choosing. As he's now repriced the reprints (which the Enterprise was one) I've decided not to be cheeky and asked for an older Vulcan cruiser, which my sister will be getting for Christmas.
I've now opened my D7 and D'D, and as it's now dark I'll take pictures of them tomorrow.

If anyone in the UK wants to know where I'm ordering these from then drop me a pm.

Ok, so the Klingons. I've not played the Klingons yet, but their ships seem to be attack heavy and agile. my sister used cloak to get up close under cloak and then keep doing hard turns (90 degree) and coming about (180 degree turns) to keep in the firing arcs. Mostly they don't have rear firing arcs, and they seem to be very into boarding parties and torpedoes.
The Vor'cha class Maht-H'a is part of the starter pack, although my sister repainted it for me as the older pieces have really bad paint jobs.
The D7 class Gr'oth is an addon. It's TOS era (obviously) so its stats are a little underwhelming and it lacks a cloak, but it comes with some good Captain and crew abilities and the model and paint job are very good (although it's obviously a K'Tinga model).
The Gr'oth is from the Trouble with Tribbles, so it comes with Tribbles, which are a really interesting mechanic (but probably one I'd avoid lol).

Romulans. These are tough ships, surprisingly agile, but not brilliant attack value. However to compensate they have some good upgrade options, most notably the plasma torpedo which has a shorter range but packs more punch. The models are very good, the only problem being the remains of the casting isn't cut off particularly nicely. I actually quite like the plain paint job, but again the one in the starter was repainted by the sister and her other half.
The starter comes with the IRW Khazara and the IRW Haakona is an addon. The base stats are the same but they (surprisingly) have slightly different upgrade options. The Khazara has three crew slots, a weapons slot and a tech slot, while the Haakona replaces the tech slot with another weapon slot.

The Enterprise D. This ship is the third of the starter pack ships. From what I've seen it has the worst of the paint jobs, however again mine has been repainted. The model is ok but it lacks phaser arrays on the saucer(!) and the nacelles are a little square.
Unfortunately the E-D is a space whale. It does not maneuver well at all! It's saving grace is that, like most Federation starships, it has an aft arc for its secondary weapons. Also one of those weapons options is a mines... where the the Big E used mines I really don't recall. Also the E-D has the option to fire its main weapon in a 360 arc but at a lower attack rating.
Like most Federation starships, the Enterprise relies mostly on crew upgrades. The starter pack comes with a lot of crew options and also comes with Picard, which is still probably the best Captain I've seen in Attack Wing so far. The only other level 9 is TOS Kirk (not TMP Kirk who is an 8), but Picard also has a good action skill.

My Defiant arrived this week  Which means I now have a Defiant and a, erhm, Defiant. But one is a Mirror Defiant. By the time Attack Wing had got to the Mirror Defiant they seemed to have figured out how to paint ships. The panels are nicely painted and it even has a couple of red pinstripes. It actually looks very much like a Defiant paint scheme. My new Defiant is a reprint, so they've painted it metallic silver like the rest of the Starfleet reprints. And you know what, it works. The panels are metallic blue and it also has the pinstripes. Both are very detailed (if small, approx one inch) models.
I was somewhat surprised by the stats. They haven't made the Defiant the over-gunned battlecruiser it was sometimes portrayed as. The Defiant and Mirror Defiant also have slightly different stats. The Defiant is a very balanced ship with tough shields, but the Mirror Defiant trades one of those shield points for an extra attack point. So Mirror Defiant hits harder, but Defiant tanks better.
A little disappointingly, the Mirror Defiant only has two weapon upgrades and two crew upgrades, whereas the real Defiant has that plus a Tech upgrade. I think it's because on of the Mirror crew abilities is to add a tech upgrade.
As for agility, both ships are more or less the same. Both have a come about, which I think makes it the only Starfleet vessel to do so (it's more a Klingon thing). Both can also do hard 90 degree turns, although the Mirror Defiant has to pay a power penalty at speed 3 whereas the real Defiant does not.
Obviously the Mirror Defiant comes with a mirror universe crew, and the real Defiant comes with a Cloak, but honestly I'm not sure I'll waste the tech slot and an extra action on a cloak (as it disables the card to use it I'd need to re-enable on one turn then use the cloak on another - unlike a ship with a native cloak).
If I were operating a mixed fleet I think I'd operate both of these together as they compliment each other, however in a "pure" fleet I'm tempted to double up on the Fed Defiant (one being an unnamed Defiant which loses a crew slot and shield point) as it has the hard 3 turn and operate a small wolfpack.
That's all I'm getting for now. Next job is to sort through my cards and come up with some good combinations for games. I may set up a spreadsheet to do this.
When it's light I'll try to remember to take a photo of the whole fleet.

Now I know I said that was going to be it for now, but the shop I was buying from discovered a few TOS Enterprises during a reorganisation. So I ordered it and today the package arrived and...
Once again they had sent me a TMP Enterprise.
For those keeping score that is now the third I've received. It will be going back this weekend.

It Arrived!!! :D
Considering how bad they are at painting these things, the TOS Enterprise actually has a good paint job. The problem is that it's tiny. I mean, really tiny. It's maybe half the size of my D7. I've only just got home so it's still in the box, but I'll do a review later this week.

Ok, so maybe a bit longer than a week.
The Enterprise is nicknamed the tinyprise in the attack wing forums, which is because it is tiny!
The paint scheme is remarkable given how small it is, although again it has a silvery base hull.
The ship itself isn't that impressive (it is TOS era in a largely TMP era game), but it does come with some good crew. TOS era Captain Kirk is another 9 point captain and he has two abilities and gets them at a discount - this gives him a good "knockout punch" style instead of Picards continuous pressure type stats (one ability but a free basic action each turn). The big reason people want this ship is it comes with the "Cheat Death" captain ability. Basically when the ship is killed it allows you to return it to the board with a single hit point remaining. If you have Scotty or O'Brien then you can start repairing the damage.
I need to update my spreadsheet and start coming up with some build ideas - only a few weeks until I have to play the Sister and her fiancee again...

Spreadsheet updated and now includes a small table to help me calculate point costs. I'm thinking that Captain Spock, Valtane and Lojur could make for a nice combination on a torpedo heavy ship. Excelsior especially as it has that 180 degree forward arc and an aft arc. Or maybe the Defiant, as I could use it to carry two sets of torpedoes and fire them on subsequent turns. That could be evil...

I wonder how hard it would be to code this. Also what engine and if it could be done as a mod instead of having to do everything from scratch. Battle for Wesnoth is turn based, on a hex grid, and open source...

I've seen videos of a virtual reality version (i.e. moving counters around a virtual table).
I believe there is also an online version of B5Wars which, trust me, is a far far more complicated game.

It seems there was a theme for Christmas which I was unaware of - Attack Wing.
I ended up with an extra Valdore, Excelsior and Connie courtesy of my sister and a Cube from my parents.
The cube is big! It is the Wolf 359 version so it comes with Locutus, but not much else sadly. My sister recommended it for the solo play rules, but it seems that comes only in the First Contact edition (which also comes with sphere). I may have to add a sphere to my collection in order to get some Borg upgrades (this cube has slots for three, but doesn't include any!).

I played two games over the holidays. One was before Christmas where I ran an Exclesior and Reliant combination and didn't do too badly (although I didn't win). The Reliant was just a little too fragile even with Picard at the conn. Part of the problem was that I gimped myself so that they didn't know I had located a Defiant, next time out there will be Quantum torpedoes. Spock on the Excelsior performed much better as it meant the ship had three actions per turn!

Second game was after Christmas where I tried out a pair of Valdores. The ships performed better than expected but the limitations of the Romulans became glaringly obvious - almost every upgrade requires an Action and each ship can only do one Action per turn. As I tended to use that for cloak based stuff it meant I couldn't really use any of my upgrades. Even the weapons enhancements were Actions, and as Actions are done as part of the movement phase I needed to declare there use before I knew if the target was going to be in arc (on every occasion it wasn't - i.e. a wasted Action). So if the Romulans are going to use the cloak then they need to rely more on the native ship strength, and the ships themselves are quite tough. Anyway, I won the second game going up against a Sovereign and a Defiant.

Wow, you weren't kidding about the cube's size. I'm guessing Borg vessels don't have a turning radius, weapon arcs, or so on, and are fully omni-directional?

I'll confess I haven't checked the weapons arcs.
The cube has a "front", it can move forwards and reverse. Maneuvering seems to be based on rotation, I'll need to actually try it out to understand exactly how it works though.

Attack wing does look fun to play, kinda like FASA. I just wish the ships are to scale really, but looks fun. If I'm correct, wasn't attack wing from a different game made by the same company?
Also noted, I have seen some modifications for the game, ranging from repaints to someone actually doing a proper LARGE scale version of the game, using actual starship models from different series as main ships!

Yes, there was a previous game and that is where the majority of models come from - they reused the molds. In fact, the poor definition on the early Defiant and Klingon models is because they used the molds for the cloaked ships which didn't have any detail.
It is also a shame about the scale - but then the game covers all eras so that would be hard to do.
I actually started drafting up ideas for a B5 version. The Attack Wing system is very simple and could be easily used across many genres. In fact, Trek is probably the one it least suits!

The only question I would have about a B5 version is how fighters would be handled. They seem a bit small to be pieces, but too autonomous to be weapons.

I had an email telling me that Attack Wing ships were on offer and my obsessive compulsiveness made me expand my Klingon fleet. So I know have the K'Vort class Koraga and the K'Tinga class T'Ong.

Models first - the K'Vort is a very nice model with lots of detail and actually quite well painted. The K'Tinga is similar to the D7 model but in green... and the nacelles are on backwards

Stats wise, these are offensively oriented (who'd have thought). They have great agility and actually the Vor'Cha, K'Tinga and K'Vort all have exactly the same maneuvers. To me this screams that these ships should be operated in formation, as I can have multiple named ships (with the better stats) all make the same turns and all shoot the same target at once. The D7 is more agile but has less health and no cloak. Surprisingly the K'Vort also has an aft weapons arc. I can understand why my sister prefers to fly Klingons, however she tends to split her ships apart.

Addons wise, the cards that come with the ships are not very inspiring, but it's more options than I had before.

I've got some Borg ships coming soon...

My OCD is going to make me go bankrupt! I'm not going to buy any more of these, I have enough!!

Borg first. I have now got a Borg Diamond and a Scout Cube. the models are generic dark plastic, the diamond has some painted highlights. There's some nice modeled in greebling and panel lines. Not much I can really say about the Scout, it's nicely cubic.
All Borg ships handle more or less the same, 360 degree weapon arcs, slow and by rotating to face the direction of travel. The Diamond is almost as tough (and costly) as a Cube - you'll be playing at a 2-1 or 3-1 disadvantage on points. The Scout costs about the same as a normal ship and has broadly equivalent stats.
Borg upgrades are also pricy - although there are some really good ones for that cost. The Scout crew upgrades are good at disabling targets. There is also a really good tech upgrade which essentially adds to the ships evade capability as it gets hit more - i.e. it adapts to enemy fire.
Borg Action mechanics usually rely upon Drones. Each "Captain" will have a number of available drones, to perform actions you usually have to spend some of your pool of drones. Sometimes the more drones you expend the more powerful the same action (e.g. spend 3 drones to gain 3 attack die, or 1 drone to gain 1). Some upgrades allow you to regain drones. The number of drones is also linked to your initiative value - the more drones you spend the lower your initiative.
Another interesting mechanic is the Regenerate capability. As an action the ship can regain one hull point.
All in all, I think the Borg could be a very tricky race to fight against. However, because of the need to manage your dwindling supply of drones, I think they could be quite a tough race to play well.

My other acquisition was the ISS Avenger, because my OCD demanded an NX class. The model is in the silvery plastic, not much in the way of paint but plenty of panel details in the mold.
The ship is slow but agile and includes a 2 and 3 comeabout, although the three is a red manoeuvre. The ship isn't very powerful (it is pre-TOS after all), it has a high evade value due to its agility and three hull points, but only 2 attack points and no shields. It also only has four upgrade slots - but then it is dirt cheap to play.
The innate ship ability boosts the attack value if Aux Power has been used, and so many of the Captain and Crew skills require the use of Aux Power. Unfortunately most of the Captain abilities suck (they don't have a high value either). The weapons upgrades are also basic, although the Plasma Cannons provide a fwd and aft capability with a slightly higher rating than the ships base attack value and no need of a Target Lock action - which could be useful.
The Tech upgrades however include Hull Plating and Emergency Bulkheads, which I think have great potential to aid in ship survivability. The Sabotage captain ability is also going to be my Go To card when playing Mirror Universe.
However, it's doubtful I'll play the Avenger much, unless it's a period specific game. Maybe as a support ship, but without shields it won't last long.
