I keep waiting for Terra's blitzkrieg any minute now
Don't worry, if he invades, I'll help with my warbirds. Warfish? The submarines. Or the super Gatling guns. Once I get any of those toys.

So you stole Terra's cat nip Cabal
Better, I tricked Rifraf into declaring war on Sweden, who I had a defensive pact with, which immediately triggered a retaliatory declaration of war by me before it was even my turn. After a few turns, Terra joined Rifraf's side.

Also, Rifraf found one of my secret bases, but only one.

As I said Cabal, well played. I knew it would come to war, but I held out hope. Germany and France against England. Now there's a twist to history

Civ 5: The war ended this week. Sweden and the city states turned out to be completely useless partners so it was pretty much just me against the combined forces of Terra and Rifraf. It went well for me at first, and I was able to capture Terra's city of Dresden, which I sold to Sweden since Terra wasn't accepting it as ransom to end the war. Terra quickly got it back in a peace treaty with Sweden. Meanwhile, neither Rifraf nor I were able to make significant gains against each other due to the terrain along our border. However, Terra quickly gained the upper hand with an amphibious assault on my city of Hutzel. I was able to slow him down, but could not save the city. As Terra's forces advanced on Romulus, I got lucky with a great general and plopped a citadel near the city. I also took Terra by surprise when I recalled my fledgling invasion forces from my listening posts to assist in the defense of Romulus. By attacking from the east via Romulus and from the north via Khitomer, I was able to finally stop Terra's forces, destroying some valuable artillery and killing his general. Unfortunately for me, Hutzel remains occupied by the German invaders. On the bright side, there's world peace.

Well, Terra got a city. That's something. We also all learned what our relative military strengths are.

Always look forward to Cabal's updates.
I do enjoy that people enjoy these. How much of Terra's invasion were you able to see, anyway? I know you got some crossbowmen down to Hutzel late in the war.

I saw Terra's force amassed at Hutzel before he attacked and then like 2 turns in our shared borders expired which shoved both my crossbomen up to your other city Unroth and you killed one and almost killed the other. Very poor timing on that one. Crossbows against gatlings isn't very effective. I never got a peak at Romulus though

Almost forgot to do an update on the Civ match. Terra started an invasion of Sweden and we had a conversation about which of the two of us is supposed to be the bad guy. He successfully captured Stockholm, which I had an excellent view of thanks to a ship I had in the area specifically to spectate. I also got a Merchant of Venice from a city-state ally, which I used to annex Rifraf's only city-state ally.

We had an interesting Civ session this week. Here's a really rough map with relevant cities, for context.
civmap.png
Like I said, really rough. I'm red, Terra's grey, Rifraf's pale blue, and Sweden is dark blue, to match the in-game colors. I also didn't include city states or islands.

So, Hutzel was under Terra's control since the last war and he had also just taken Stockholm. My forces out of Romulus, Remus, and Unroth retook Hutzel (which turned out to be far more troops than I needed), while forces out of Khitomer assaulted Dresden. As this was going on, I also landed some troops on the coast north of Dresden and had a stranded ship bombard Stockholm because it had nothing else to do. Terra's forces quickly returned from Stockholm and I was forced back to my borders. Shortly after all this started, more of my troops landed west of Munich (or Munchen, as Terra has it, but I don't know how to do the umlaut) and started pillaging. Yes, I circumnavigated the globe to inconvenience Terra. The war was over very quickly, as just a couple turns after the first troops reached Munich, Terra proposed peace. As it stands, Stockholm is the only occupied city.

Also, the reason the war started when it did is because I was three turns away from running out of money due to the upkeep costs of my army. I had wanted to build up more, particularly at Khitomer, but if I waited any longer my army was going to start deserting for lack of pay. On the bright side, enough of my troops died that I am now back into positive income and Terra now fears my military.

I love it. Pretty accurate. I think my city of Troyes is east of Paris. We all have such a build up of troops there I'm waiting for someone to sneeze and start the next war.

However, my troops are just practicing war games so if you hear a stray shot it's nothing to fear.

Cabal, Praetor of the Romulan Sea Empire, has been elected leader of the world following a grueling war with Germany and France! When it became apparent that I had the votes to elect myself, Terra started building up forces in his homeland and Dresden. However, last session, I launched a surprise attack to retake Hutzel (and burn down Dresden, but that didn't pan out), catching him off guard. This brief war was followed by a massive buildup of forces by all of us in the Khitomer-Dresden-Troyes tri-city region. This week, it came to a head with Terra launching a second invasion in an attempt to take Romulus to prevent me from electing myself. Below is the map at the start of the war.
minimap.png

We briefly seemed evenly matched with Romulan forces holding their own at Khitomer, the new Warfish (submarines) sinking German forces in the bay, and launching a counter invasion of Germany's west coast. However, it quickly became apparent that Terra's forces were superior as my navy was sunk and my invasion forces destroyed. This only got worse when Rifraf brought France into the fray on Terra's side. I recalled my forces to Romulus in a desperate bid to defend it, leaving Khitomer and Hutzel with only token defenses. They quickly fell to Terra's Panzers.

At this point we took lunch (or a late snack, in Terra's case) and encountered technical difficulties. Fortunately, we had saved just a couple turns earlier so we didn't lose much.

Anyway, the war raged on. Fortunately, I still had my citadel from the first time Terra tried to take Romulus, ideally situated to be as much of an inconvenience as possible. I chose my greatest machinegunner to lead the defense and named her Sela (because of course). Something wasn't right, though. Terra's forces weren't advancing; they were just waiting there, just out of range. Then off in the distance, there was a lone bomber approaching Romulus, avoiding my AA and triplanes. It dropped one bomb, right on Sela's head. An atomic bomb. Panzers followed the bomb, and the Romulan defenses crumbled. Miraculously, Sela survived and managed to escape to Remus. I managed to scrape up one last wave of reinforcements from the mountain pass by Unroth and sent them to assist. Meanwhile, a combined German and French fleet approached from the south. I managed to kill Terra's general, but it wasn't enough. Given time, he would take the city.

Time, however, was something that Terra didn't have. In 2016 we cast our votes for world leader and in 2017, just as Terra's forces reached Romulus, the results were posted: 4 for Sweden, 10 for Terra, 26 for Cabal. I placed a crown on my head and made that sound the Spyro thieves make. Here's what Romulus looked like at the end of the game.
Romulus.jpg

And here are some maps from the end-of-match menu.

Start of match. Looks like Rifraf took another turn to found Paris.
000-Start.png

Sweden founds Helsinki. Unfortunately for Gustavus, I wanted a city one tile to the west.
088-HelsinkiFounded.png

That's better. Shame about Helsinki, though.
109-KhitomerFounded.png

Terra founds Dresden. I had no idea how important that was going to be.
145-DresdenFounded.png

Terra captures Hutzel.
210-HutzelCaptured.png

And 38 turns later, he captures Stockholm.
248-StockholmCaptured.png

Shortly before the last war, I liberate Hutzel.
256-HutzelLiberated.png

Naturally that wouldn't stand and Hutzel was the first city to fall in the final war.
290-HutzelCaptured2.png

Almost immediately after. Khitomer was also taken.

The last image, the world as it stood before being formally united under me.

We're starting up a new match next week. @LordChicken, are you interested? It sounded like you were when we started this one, but you were a bit late. If anyone else wants to give it a shot, just ask.

Wow, what a game! Thanks to @CABAL and @Rifraf for all the fun, and special thanks to CABAL for the great recaps. Congrats for winning, too!

So what times would work for you?
As a reference, we previously met Sundays, at 16:00 CEST. In your case, I guess that would be 09:00 am?

Thanks! It was really hard. I only really had to survive long enough to get the diplomatic victory, but I kept trying to distract you two with wars and that almost wiped me out. I think I might go more peaceful next time. And remember, eliminating city-states reduces the total pool of votes, which reduces the percentage that the allied player has. I actually got worried when Rifraf switched ideologies and increased the vote pool.

So, does 9:00 AM Sunday work for you at all, @LordChicken? We would only have a few hours, but we decided to try out a simultaneous turn system this time so it should move faster than before.

Unfortunately my work is located about one and a half to two hours away from where I live (damn Austin traffic). :( Sundays at 9:00AM wouldn't really work for me since I usually get home by 1:00-130AM and am in bed by 2:30-3:00.

That's ok, when my lease is up in February I will find a place closer to work and would be available to play epic games of Civilization on Sundays, or whatever day.

Well, darn.:( I was looking forward to fresh meat. I do have another player who's interested, but she needs to either figure out what's wrong with her laptop or build a new PC first. Either way, it'll be a while.

It was a great game and great conversations. I made some stupid moves here/there and thought Terra was going to kill me when I did foolish backstab. We actually had to reload after that so history was erased. I look forward to more games with you all and any others who join.

So do you want to try to dive in with us Sunday morning or would you prefer to wait until game 3, which will probably be a few months? It's a lot to learn all at once, so I would personally recommend waiting until you have a handle on things. We'll help in the chat if you want to join tomorrow, though. We're friendly. Usually.

EDIT: I've also updated the original post.
Which reminds me, if I've goofed and anyone notices the list isn't in alphabetical order somewhere, please mention it so I can fix it.
