• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Who here has played Star Trek Continuum?

Hi all!

I found this site while looking for more ships for the Star Trek: Continuum mod for Homeworld 2.

I am pushing for a release and there are quite a few nice ships here, so I thought I would join up and say hello, see what people thought :)

Has anyone played the mod? Any feedback?

Welcome Nathanius. I have H2 and the Continuum mod. I drooled over the explosion effects when I first saw it. They've done a great job so far though I've only played it only a little bit. I didn't really give H2 or the mod a chance so will have to get back into them at some point.

The video was the release media for our second full release, there's been a couple of updates after that but I'm wanting to get one more out before the end of the year and HW2 remastered comes to our doors ;)

We've had quite a few successes with scripting in HW2, our coder has vanished though but he left a quite finished framework for me to work with :)

What I am looking for here are more TMP, TOS and ENT era ships (I saw Jetfreak did an impressive retexture of some Romulan ships that would be perfect for TOS!).

I follow the mod on Moddb I think though I don't play H2, never found the controls or feel comfortable enough for me.

Still nice work.

Though a point I want to bring up, not everyone but a lot of members here don't allow their work to be included in mods hosted outside MSFC. You'll have to find out from individual artists what their conditions are in regards to their work.

That being said if you never decided to host here on MSFC, you're more than welcome to, while no one here actively mods H2 to my knowledge we are always looking at opportunities to expand our membership and move into other games.

Nice to hear from you Majestic! :)

You're right of course, I've been disappointed on many occasions when a perfect ship or station can't be included in the mod because the creator didn't want their work redistributed as part of someone else's mod or even converted to be used in another game. We have always respected the wishes of the modellers involved and tried to find an alternative in those occasions (there's been a few potentially really cool features I've had to just give up on because of that actually). Of course we have an extensive ReadMe file where proper credit is given to the original creators of the meshes and textures and the original ReadMe files are always included in the finished product too.

I consider contribution of meshes on a ship by ship basis anyway, never assume carte blanc with all of a modeller's work if they give permission for one ship...

I would be happy to pop a copy of our next release here, hopefully I'll be able to scrounge up enough ships to get it done in a respectable amount of time :)

It's good to hear that you respect an artist's rights, it one of the founding principles and ideals that this site was original founded on.

We've always strived as a community to to help each other and others out, however many of us have also been burnt along the way and it's a reason why many of us have chosen this stance. I in particular have made it abundantly clear that my work is MSFC exclusive, it doesn't matter if someone wants to convert, kitbash, re-texture or anything else to my work they are welcome to do so as long as the credits are included and the big one is it isn't hosted in part or full (ie, single file or part of a mod) outside this site. In fact in recent months (since we upgraded to Xenforo) my files have become more available to members, I used to password protect everything and only gave the passwords out to particular people. So I have eased off overtime. :D

I can understand the difficulty of building a mod and having trouble finding resources, that was one of the issues I found back 7 or so years ago which encouraged me to eventually learn to model and texture myself.

It's tempting to move Continuum just to this site to comply with your conditions for use of your meshes... Access to the resources here would mean that I would pretty much already have everything needed to get the mod to where I want it before HW2 remastered comes out...

From what I've seen though there's nothing here that anyone can download without first investing in the community, while this isn't an issue for me personally that would severely limit the dissemination of the Continuum mod as far as the wider public is concerned

Hmm, quite a decision

Understandably our policy is not for everyone, we've had our fair share of complaints from people who just want to download everything and disappear. However we have felt that it's not a way to help build a community, or even expand or continue it. A community we feel isn't about files but about the people who populate it.

In fact our current policy was a community decision with 90% of the people who replied liking or at least supporting the idea, most of them were the artists who host with us.

A major problem I think is that the gaming communities for these older games are diminishing in fact we ourselves have grown smaller overtime due to people leaving the game and modding scene altogether. I suppose it is inevitable thanks to newer computers and operating systems having trouble running these older games, newer more advanced games being released and people just growing bored with the same thing for years on end. I still remember back to 2000/1 when there were mod teams galore for A2 and it was a great time for playing and modding the game.

Back to point and with all that being said it's a decision that some serious thought needs to be put into, considering the pros and cons of it. If you do decide to follow through with it, my files are open to conversion.

I think that I am going to have to leave the Continuum mod outside the confines of MSFC, there have been (to date) 37,990 downloads of the Continuum installers on Moddb and goodness knows how many more where the installed has been re-hosted. I feel that that gives us some responsibility to make successive copies of the mod just as available to everyone as the initial releases.

That said, I did come to the site looking for resources for the mod. TMP era, TOS era and ENT era ships specifically and the quality of the works here are more than ample to fit in with excellent quality ships we've used from HerbyGuitar, TheStressPuppy and Aad Moerman (to name a few).

If anyone wants to volunteer their work we will happily include it if there's a role for it in the mod, otherwise we will of course respect the wishes of the model creators.

It truly is a shame in regards to your models though Majestic, your Romulan ships which were retextured by JetFreak into TOS colours would have filled a very difficult gap in Trek ship designs :p

I would still like to participate in the community here of course, and I may still pop some ships which I can't release with the mod into Homeworld 2 just for screenshots to share :)

Remember, you are free to mirror the mod here, if you like. Don't feel restricted to either ModDB or MSFC, you can have both. I'm going to go find my HW2 disk now.

There's all of the current required installers at http://sourceforge.net/projects/hw2trekmod/files/Release BETA/ or on our Moddb page.

I'd be delighted to be the cause of a Homeworld wing of your resources section though! But would just mirroring the next installer here satisfy the extra conditions of use for the models? I was hoping to mirror it all here anyway once the resources section opened up to me, since there are remastered versions of Homeworld coming at the end of the year I am expecting a resurgence in the modding community :)

I suppose you would have to talk with your modelers about whether or not they would be willing to allow their stuff on MSFC, but we don't really have any restrictions against it it the contributers are OK with it.

The Homeworld series was already very pretty so the HD versions should be stunning.

It's all up to the individual artists here @Nathanius MSFC holds no rights over any artists work it's there to host wherever they like. It's one of those founding ideals we have here, an artists rights are respected. My conditions are well known which is that all my work can't be hosted off site, however many other artists here are more flexible.

Majestic, could I ask for some advice from you?

The Romulan ships which Jetfreak retextured (he has kindly given permission for us to use those textures) are Legacy ports. Since Milkshape doesn't have an importer for Legacy I'm a little stuck as to how to get the needed meshes from my copy of Legacy.

How did you convert them out of the M3D format?

It's a pretty long and painfully process as you need 3DMax to do it plus another program, Milkshape just doesn't cut it unfortunately. Tell you want you can download my original ones and use those if you can convert from SOD, if not I can message them (MS3D format) to you. Just list me and MSFC (a link would be good) as the original converters and we will be good. Jetfreak's textures will fit straight on them.

You can use any of the Legacy ports I have released if those credits are met.

Thank you! That will be immensely helpful! I had found one program which could sort of import the M3D meshes but it was $50 for a license

I do have the 3D Object Converter 4.80 which handles SOD files very nicely, so that's a very easy port from there.

I have already set up an MSFC section in our credits file since JetFreak agreed to the use of his textures, I was planning on linking to the download page and we always include the original ReadMe too.

Let me guess Ultimate Unwrap3D? That's my mapping software I use for my models but I must admit it comes in handy for other things too.

That was it! They've got a very good demo setup, let you do everything but save the file...

I use it for mapping my models, it's not perfect but does a way better job than MS3D. Looking forward to learn 3D Max however. Doing that in my course later this year.

3D Max is what HerbyGuitar used to do these beautiful original meshes (everything except the Negh'vah, which is by Aad Moerman):

I just discovered this mod when i say my friend playing it on his 7 year old laptop. I thought it wouldn't work on older hardware, but it turns out it works better than expected, and that's while connected to steam. Anyways I am a big fan of the TMP era. The Mirandas are awesome. :)
